Entomological research

mf-montage

Entomology is the branch of biology that deals with insects (Insecta), the most species-rich group of living things, insects. Since insects shape and existentially influence almost all terrestrial ecosystems due to the functions they perform, their study is extremely important. Working topics of entomology include all fields of biology focused on insects as well as the context to related, natural science disciplines. The scientifically oriented entomology has a tradition of more than one hundred years in Krefeld. The Entomological Society Krefeld e.V. was founded as a scientifically oriented, non-profit professional society in 1905. Its members work on a broad basis with almost all topics of biology and systematics of insects. These research topics include:

Collections & Archives

Entomological collections and archives originate from the study of insect species, their distribution and way of life, their behavior and interactions with their environment. They are the life's work of entomologists working on a scientific basis. The meticulously prepared and professionally labeled specimens are kept in these reference collections. The compilation of such individual collections takes place in principle by every active working entomologist. In addition to the actual collection holdings, original documents, equipment, card indexes and technical literature - sometimes with handwritten comments - are often also taken over and archived. The first impulse to combine and preserve collection holdings of different researchers dates back to the founding period of the Entomological Society Krefeld and includes today also the contents of the former Natural Science Museum Krefeld. The takeover of collections and accompanying materials is usually done as a donation or testamentary bequest of the members of the association with conditions about the professional preservation in Krefeld, the accessibility and further processing possibility by the resident and external entomologists.

The collections as well as these accompanying original metadata represent the entomological life's work of the respective persons. They are the authoritative sources for all further research in almost every conceivable question, for example:

In addition to the above-mentioned museal entomological collections, herbaria, as well as a specialized library and various archival materials are preserved and constantly used for ongoing research on various topics.

Both the collection and the archive holdings are therefore subjects connected with dynamic processes depending on their varied and intensive use which is influenced by new working methods according to the progress of knowledge.

Knowledge transfer & publications

archiv1

The results of the research and investigation activities and also the continuous processing of collection and archive items require the publication and communication of the new state of knowledge in various ways. For this purpose, the active entomologists use national and international journals as well as local and association's own publication series. Among the latter is e.g. the journal Series Naturalis - here an example of an article on the standardized application of malaise traps for special entomological studies and insect monitoring.

Furthermore, our training program increasingly includes assistance and concept development for hands-on science education and the promotion of young entomologists.
